BUFFALO, NY -- The Johns Hopkins University men's swimming team capped an outstanding showing at the NCAA Division III Championships with six individual All-Americans and two All-American relay teams on the final day as the Blue Jays finished third in the final team standings. In addition, Johns Hopkins head coach George Kennedy was named the NCAA Division III Coach-of-the-Year for the second consecutive year and the third time since arriving at Johns Hopkins in 1985.
Sophomore Scott Armstrong (Medford Lakes, NJ/Bernards) capped an impressive showing at the championships with a second-place finish in the 1650 free with a time of 15:33.61. Armstrong also swam the third leg of the second-place 800 free relay (6:47.83) and the anchor leg of Hopkins' sixth-place 400 free relay (3:07.46).
Sophomore Justin Brannock (West Palm Beach, FL/Dreyfoos School of the Arts) swam the first leg of both the 800 free relay and the 400 free relay and added a fourth-place finish in the 100 free with a time of 45.83. In addition, classmate Dave Lofthus (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) picked up his third, top-eight finish with a seventh-place showing in the 200 back (1:52.42). Lofthus also swam the second leg of the 400 free relay.
Other individuals who earned All-America honors for the Blue Jays on the final day included senior Kamal Masud (Karachi, Pakistan/Mercersburg Academy) and freshmen Oliver Buccicone (Rochester, MN/Lourdes) and Scott Pitz (Paoli, PA/Conestoga). Masud placed 14th in the 200 fly (1:54.19), Buccicone finished 15th in the 1650 free (16:12.29) and Pitz placed 16th in the 200 breast (2:08.69). Masud also swam the anchor leg of the 800 free relay.
Senior Will Freund (Linwood, NJ/Mainland) capped his career by swimming the second leg of the 800 free relay and freshman Kyle Robinson (Holden, MA/Wachesett) swam the third leg of the 400 free relay.
The third-place finish for the Blue Jays is the highest since a third-place showing in 1994. In addition, it marks the 30th time in the last 31 years that JHU has placed in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships and the ninth time during that same period that the Blue Jays have placed in the top three. The 267 points the Blue Jays accumulated at the championships are the most for Hopkins since 1996, when JHU placed fourth with 291 points.
