FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The 10th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team closed out a successful weekend with a 6-0 win over 27th-ranked Hampden-Sydney Sunday afternoon at the Mary Washington Tennis Courts. The Blue Jays win their seventh straight match to improve to 16-4 on the season, while the Tigers suffer just their third loss and fall to 12-3. Hopkins improves to 14-1 on the season against region opponents.
Hopkins opened the match by sweeping all three doubles matches. Sophomore Warren Elgort (New York, NY/Trinity School) and junior Ryan Rauck (Columbus, OH/Bexley) won their fifth straight match with an 8-1 win over Tal Covington and Zack Pack at third. At second, sophomore Jacob Barnaby (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista) and junior Casey Blythe (Louisville, KY/St. Xavier) won their sixth straight match by beating Kevin Calhoun and Shad Harrell, 8-3. Senior David Maldow (Jericho, NY/Jericho) and junior Andrew Wang (Sparta, NJ/Sparta) then won 8-4 at first over William Moss and Rich Pugh.
In singles, Hopkins picked up wins at first, third and sixth before the match was called as the Blue Jays had clinched the win. Freshman Andy Hersh (Valrico, FL/Newsome) lost just one game in his win at third, beating Harrell, 6-1, 6-0. Freshman Morgan Dauer (Lloyd Harbor, NY/Cold Spring Harbor) dropped just two games in a 6-2, 6-0 win at sixth over Pack. And Wang finished up the match with a 6-3, 6-4 win at first.
Hopkins returns to action on Tuesday, April 20 as Gettysburg visits Baltimore. The Centennial Conference match is slated to begin at 4:00 pm. The Blue Jays currently sit atop the Centenninal Conference standings with a 7-0 mark and just two conference matches remaining.
