Oct. 24, 2014 BALTIMORE, MD - Johns Hopkins University men's lacrosse coach Dave Pietramala announced today that long stick midfielder Michael Pellegrino (Oakdale, NY/Connetquot), attackman Wells Stanwick (Baltimore, MD/Boys' Latin) and goalie Eric Schneider (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) have been selected in a vote of their teammates as captains for the 2015 season. This will be the second year Pellegrino serves as a captain, while Stanwick and Schneider were selected for the first time.
Pellegrino is just the 13th two-time captain at Johns Hopkins since 1949. A tenacious long stick midfielder and a Second Team USILA All-America selection as a junior last season, Pellegrino has played in 45 games in his career and counts five goals, five assists, 98 ground balls and 38 caused turnovers to his credit. His selection as an All-American last season made him the first long stick middie at Johns Hopkins to earn the honor since Corey Harned grabbed honorable mention status in 2004.
Stanwick, a senior, has twice earned Honorable Mention USILA All-America honors at attack and is Johns Hopkins' career scoring leader among returning players. He enjoyed the finest season of his career in 2014 as he led the team in points (67) and assists (44) while also adding 23 goals. Stanwick, who has started 33 of the 45 games he has played in since arriving at Homewood, counts 56 goals and 81 assists for 137 career points to his credit. He ranks 11th in school history in career assists and 26th in career points. In addition, his 44 assists last season rank as the fourth-highest single-season total in school history.
Schneider, a graduate student in Johns Hopkins' Carey Business School, started all 16 games in goal last season and posted an 8.84 goals against average and a .547 save percentage. He has played in 26 career games and sports a 12-5 record in 17 career starts. He is the first goalie to be selected as a team captain at Johns Hopkins since Rob Scherr in 2003.
The trio will officially lead the team for the first time this weekend as Johns Hopkins will conclude its fall season on Saturday, October 25 as the Blue Jays take on Drexel and Penn in the University Classic at the University of Pennsylvania's Penn Park. The scrimmage with the Dragons will begin at 1:15 pm with the matchup against the host Quakers set to start at 3 pm.
