Sept. 2, 2014 Previous Breakdowns: Defensive Line • Linebackers • Defensive Backs • Special Teams
BALTIMORE, MD - In the fifth of a seven-part series breaking down the 2014 Johns Hopkins football team, HopkinsSports.com takes a look at the Blue Jay offensive line. While newcomers to the program may make an impact this season, the breakdown includes only returning players.
Who's Back: Among the five starters from last year, only junior Colin Egan is back. Egan was the only non-senior among Johns Hopkins' five primary starters on the offensive line last season and will return to his spot right guard.
Experience Returning: Despite losing four starters, there is experience returning on the offensive line and the unit could go as many as 10 deep, especially early in the season.
Seniors Martin Scheuring, Kyle Flynn and Zach Lorenz are the elder statesmen up front and all figure to take on the largest roles of their career. Scheuring is the leading candidate to take over at center, while Flynn figures to see time at tackle, but could also slide inside. Lorenz played in seven games last season and should see extensive action at guard.
A strong junior class of linemen includes Rowan Cade, Baxter DeBruyn and Fernando Concepcion. Cade and DeBruyn could emerge as the two starters at tackle as both have impressive size and combined to play in 13 games a year ago. Sophomores Chantz Anderson, Blake LaDouceur and Daniel Keller all saw limited action last season behind JHU's senior-laden unit, but each has developed nicely and figures into the team's deep rotation.
What's Gone: In a program that has boasted some talented offensive linemen throughout Jim Margraff's tenure as head coach, last year's group may have been the best. Gone are tackles Armand Jenifer and Vincenzo Bonaddio, center Ben Cranston and guard Kevin Quinn. Jenifer and Cranston earned All-America honors and Bonaddio and Quinn were All-Centennial selections. The key to the success of this year's group will be how much did the returning players learn from this accomplished foursome.
