BALTIMORE, MD - Junior center Kathy Darling (Milford, DE/Milford) scored a team-high 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Johns Hopkins women's basketball team to an easy 78-23 win over Villa Julie College this afternoon in Goldfarb Gymnasium. With the win, Hopkins improved to 4-0 for the sixth time in the last seven years. Villa Julie dropped its third straight game to fall to 1-3 for the season.
Darling, who has scored in double figures in every game this season, hit 6-of-10 from the field. Senior forward Heidi Sumser (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg) totaled nine points and added five rebounds, while senior guard Michelle Kincaid (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) and sophomore guard Maureen Myers (Waverly, PA/Abington Heights) chipped in with eight points apiece for the Blue Jays.
Junior guard Ashley Shepler (Tornado, WV/Charleston Catholic) and freshman guard Ashley Felix (Pittsburgh, PA/North Catholic) tied for the team lead with five assists. Villa Julie was led by sophomore forward Maura Fannin with eight points and sophomore center Lorrie Budd with six rebounds.
JHU took control early with a 10-0 run to start the game. The Blue Jays extended their lead to 18-2 on a layup by Kincaid and took a 32-10 lead into halftime. Hopkins shot just 30 percent from the field in the first half, but held the Mustangs to 28 percent shooting and forced 22 turnovers. The Blue Jays started the second half with a 23-3 run to take a 55-13 lead with 10:37 left in the contest and cruised to the victory.
Hopkins has defeated its first four opponents by an average margin of 45.5 points and held the opposition to just 24 percent shooting from the field. The Blue Jays look for a 5-0 start on Monday against Marymount University at 7 p.m. in Goldfarb Gymnasium.
