Haverford, PA - Sophomore guard Kevin Marquez (Oakton, VA/Oakton) scored a career-high 11 points to lead the Johns Hopkins men's basketball team to a 73-58 win at Haverford Saturday afternoon in the Centennial Conference opener for both teams.

The Blue Jays jumped on the Fords early in the game, and two free throws by Steve Adams (Butler, PA/Butler) gave Hopkins an 18-6 lead with 9:44 remaining in the first half. Haverford would close to within eight at 22-14 three minutes later, but JHU went on a 20-7 run, punctuated by a Jay Kreider (Sykesville, MD/River Hill) three-pointer, to take a commanding 42-21 halftime lead.

Haverford could not get the lead below 12 points in the second half, as Brian Cosgrove (Baltimore, MD/Loyola Blakefield) and Dan Burruss (Glenn Dale, MD/DeMatha) each scored six second-half points to hold off the Fords. Burruss and Adams each finished with nine points, while Cosgrove and Dan Naturale (Bloomfield, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) added eight apiece.

Hopkins went 9-of-19 from three-point range, including three each from Marquez, who made his first career start, and Burruss. After allowing 80 points in three straight games, the Hopkins defense held the Fords to 36 percent shooting from the field and 3-of-12 shooting from the three-point line.

Sam Adams led Haverford with 12 points, while Cam Scribner and Matt Begley each added 10 for the Fords.

Hopkins will play another conference game in its next contest when the Blue Jays travel to Gettysburg on Wednesday for an 8 p.m. tip-off. . Box Score 1 2 Final Johns Hopkins (3-4, 1-0) 42 31 -73 Haverford (0-7, 0-1) 21 37 -58
