Baltimore, MD - Blue Jay forwards Matthew Doran (Stormville, NY/John Jay) and Daniel Brienza (Farmingville, NY/Sachem) each scored a goal and added an assist as the Johns Hopkins men's soccer team used a late outburst to defeat Ursinus, 5-0, Saturday afternoon at Homewood Field.
Hopkins struck first in the 14th minute when Doran chested a ball to Brienza, who blasted a shot past Bears goalkeeper B.J. Callaghan. The Blue Jays carried the one-goal lead into the 74th minute, when they erupted for four goals in a four and a half minute span.
Ryan Kitzen (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) started the barrage by knocking home a long ball from Rob Morrison (Malibu, CA/Loyola). Just 39 seconds later, Doran scored on a direct kick to give Hopkins a 3-0 lead.
Adam Hack (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) scored off a feed from Brienza 1:52 later, and Greg Mangels (Glenside, PA/Cheltenham) finished the explosion with a goal off of Morrison's second assist. Gary Kane, Jr. (Lansdale, PA/Lansdale Catholic) made just one save in 81 minutes in the victory, as the Blue Jays out-shot Ursinus, 27-1.
Hopkins will step out of conference in its next contest when the Blue Jays travel to Alvernia on Monday in a 4 p.m. match.
