LANCASTER, PA - The Johns Hopkins volleyball team, having not played in 13 days, earned second-place at the Franklin & Marshall Tournament on Saturday with a 2-1 record. The Blue Jays defeated Pittsburgh-Bradford, 3-2 and Messiah, 3-2 in the first round, before falling to Franklin & Marshall, 3-1 in the championship match. JHU improved to 2-1 on the year.
In the opener against Pittsburgh-Bradford, senior outside hitter Emily Miller (Richmond, VA/Governor's School) led the team with 19 kills and four aces, and tied for the team lead with 13 digs. Miller earned All-Tournament honors for the second time this season, after being an All-Tournament selection at the Gettysburg Tournament earlier in the year. She totaled 44 kills and 70 digs in the three matches.
Versus Messiah, junior middle hitter Sarah Payne (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) totaled a team-high 15 kills with just one error and also led the team with four blocks. Miller added 11 kills and a team-high 27 digs, while freshman setter Betsy Baydala (Rockville Centre, NY/South Side) recorded 26 digs and 34 assists.
In the championship match against Franklin & Marshall, Miller led the Blue Jays with 14 kills and 30 digs. Junior middle hitter Elisabeth Breese (Geneva, NY/Geneva) was second on the team with 11 kills and added a team-high four blocks. Freshman right side player Erin Trish (Lexington, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon) finished the match with 22 digs. Trish, seeing her first action of the season in the tournament, played solid with 45 digs, eight blocks, and seven kills in the three matches.
The Blue Jays will return to action on Wednesday, September 26 with their first home match of the season against Villa Julie College at 7:00 p.m. Hopkins defeated Villa Julie, 3-0, in the only match of the series in 1999. JHU will then open Centennial Conference play on Sunday, September 29 with a tri-match against Muhlenberg and Swarthmore beginning at 11:00 a.m.
