BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins volleyball team defeated Swarthmore, 3-0 (30-20, 30-20, 30-19) before falling to Muhlenberg, 3-1 (28-30, 30-18, 23-30, 26-30) today in a Centennial Conference tri-match in Baltimore. The Blue Jays are now 8-9 overall and 1-1 in the Centennial Conference. Muhlenberg topped Swarthmore, 3-0 (30-24, 30-24, 31-29) in the other match. The Mules improved to 10-5 overall and 3-1 in the conference, while Swarthmore fell to 8-4 overall and 0-2 in CC play.
In the opening match against Swarthmore, senior outside hitter Emily Miller (Richmond, VA/Governor's School) led the team with 11 kills and 17 digs. Freshman setter Betsy Baydala (Rockville Centre, NY/South Side) added eight kills and 11 digs to go with a team-high 10 aces and 25 assists. Freshman right side player Erin Trish (Lexington, MA/Northfield Mt. Hebron) was second on the team with five assists and 14 digs.
In a tough match versus Muhlenberg, Miller totaled team-highs in kills (17) and digs (16). Trish also recorded 16 digs, while Baydala totaled 14 digs and a team-high 29 assists and five aces. Freshman defensive specialist Katie Davis (Mesquite, TX/North Mesquite) added 11 assists.
Johns Hopkins will return to action on Wednesday, October 3 with a road match versus Bryn Mawr at 7:00 p.m. The Blue Jays hold a 6-2 advantage all-time against the Mawrters. Swarthmore travels to Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday, while Muhlenberg will host Haverford at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
