Johns Hopkins Outlasts Western Maryland, 67-63

BALTIMORE, MD - Junior center Kathy Darling (Milford, DE/Milford) scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Johns Hopkins women's basketball team to a 67-63 win over Centennial Conference rival Western Maryland this afternoon in Baltimore. With their ninth straight win, the Blue Jays improved to 15-1 overall and remained perfect in the Centennial with a 6-0 record. The Green Terror fell to 11-4 overall and 5-2 in Centennial play.

Hopkins held a 32-30 lead at halftime after back-and-forth action that featured five lead changes and six ties. JHU opened the second half with an 8-2 run to take a 40-32 lead with 14:12 remaining, but Western Maryland responded to cut the lead to two points on three occasions before regaining the lead at 55-54 with 7:12 left to play.

After three more ties and two lead changes, Hopkins took the lead for good on a short jumper by Darling. Sophomore forward Trista Snyder (West Chester, PA/Unionville) followed with two free throws to give JHU a three-point cushion at 66-63 with 1:04 left. Darling capped the scoring with two free throws after Western Maryland missed a three pointer with two seconds remaining and was forced to foul.

Snyder joined Darling in double figures with 13 points as did sophomore guard Maureen Myers (Waverly, PA/Abington Heights) with 11 points. Senior forward Jennifer Butterwei (Arnold, MD/Archbishop Spalding) led the Blue Jays with 10 rebounds and added three blocks. Snyder and freshman guard Ashley Felix (Pittsburgh, PA/North Catholic) each totaled five assists for JHU.

Junior Jen Piccolomini led Western Maryland with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Kelly Cramp added 10 points and five rebounds for the Green Terror. Sophomore Toby McIntire tallied six points, five rebounds, four assists, and three steals.

The Blue Jays return to action Wednesday, January 23 with a Centennial Conference road contest at Franklin & Marshall scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
