BALTIMORE, MD - Sophomore guard Jen Sawyer led four players in double figures with a game-high 19 points to lead the Alvernia women's basketball team to a 63-55 win over 16th-ranked Johns Hopkins this evening in Goldfarb Gymnasium. Alvernia won its third straight game to improve to 14-4, while the Blue Jays dropped a second consecutive contest to fall to 15-3.
Turnovers were the story of the first half as JHU turned the ball over 11 times and Alvernia committed 14 turnovers. The Crusaders managed to take a 29-27 halftime lead as they held Hopkins to 33 percent (9-27) from the field and connected on 46 percent (14-30) of their own shots. The lead changed hands six times in the second half before the game was tied 50-50 with 6:03 left. Alvernia then went on an 8-0 run and the Blue Jays could not get closer than six points the rest of the contest.
Sophomore guard Maureen Myers (Waverly, PA/Abington Heights) led Hopkins with 13 points and freshman forward Ashanna Randall (Media, PA/Penncrest) added 10 points and a team-high five rebounds. Junior guard Ashley Shepler (Tornado, WV/Charleston Catholic) and junior center Kathy Darling (Milford, DE/Milford) chipped in with nine and eight points, respectively.
Sawyer hit on 7-of-13 from the field and added three steals. She was joined in double figures by Amanda Yost and Kacie Androsko with 10 points each and Tanisha Giddens, who totaled a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. The Crusaders shot 46 percent (25-54) for the game and outrebounded Hopkins 47-34.
The Blue Jays return to Centennial Conference action tomorrow as they host Ursinus at 2:00 p.m. The Johns Hopkins women's basketball alumni game will take place prior to the women's game at 12:00 p.m.
