BALTIMORE, MD - Junior center Kathy Darling (Milford, DE/Milford) totaled 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Johns Hopkins women's basketball team to a 74-48 win over visiting Ursinus in Centennial Conference action this afternoon. The Blue Jays snapped a two-game skid to improve to 16-3 overall and 7-1 in the Centennial. Ursinus dropped its third straight to fall to 5-12 overall and 3-6 in conference play.
After a slow start, Ursinus opened an 11-6 lead 5:16 into the first half. The Blue Jays responded with a 13-5 run to take a 19-16 lead and expanded the lead to 31-22 at halftime. After senior forward Heidi Sumser (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg) opened the second half with a three pointer, Ursinus went on a 9-2 run to pull the Bears within 36-31 with 15:42 remaining. JHU fired back with a 15-2 run of its own and Ursinus would come no closer than 14 points the remainder of the contest.
Darling scored 12 points in the first half en route to her second double-double of the season. She was joined in double figures by freshman forward Ashanna Randall (Media, PA/Penncrest), who tallied 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Randall has scored in double figures for three straight games. Freshman guard Ashley Felix (Pittsburgh, PA/North Catholic) chipped in with nine points and four steals.
Junior guard Bridget Hussey led the Bears with 16 points, while sophomore forward Erica Maurer tallied a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Ursinus was held to 30 percent shooting from the field and committed 24 turnovers, including 17 in the opening half.
The Blue Jays return to action on Wednesday, January 30 when JHU host Centennial rival Gettysburg at 6:00 p.m. Hopkins defeated the Bullets, 76-59, earlier this season on the road.
