MONTEREY, CA - The Johns Hopkins men's basketball team used a school-record 14 three-pointers and a 45-24 rebounding advantage to knock off Bethany (CA), 93-60 in the second round of the 2002 Monterey Bay Classic. The win is the third straight and fifth in the last seven games for the Blue Jays, who improve to 6-5 with the victory. Bethany slips to 7-8 with the loss.

A balanced offensive attack was led by senior forward Matthew Eisley (Belle Vernon, PA/Belle Vernon), who scored 13 points and added 12 rebounds and a career-high six assists. Senior forward Brian Cosgrove (Baltimore, MD/Loyola) added 12 points, five rebounds, and three assists, while junior guard Jay Kreider (Sykesville, MD/River Hill) added 12 points and four rebounds.

Hopkins led 42-26 at the half, only to have Bethany score the first nine points of the second half to pull within 42-35. The Blue Jays then took control, outscoring the Bruins 51-25 the rest of the game to cruise to the victory. Kreider, who was held scoreless in the first half, scored 12 consecutive points for Hopkins at one point in the second half. The Blue Jays shot 20-of-30 (.667) from the field, including 7-of-11 (.636) from three-point range, after halftime.

Eight different players hit at least one three-pointer for Hopkins, which broke the previous school record of 12 three-pointers in a game set against Carnegie Mellon on January 7, 1989. In the last two games, Hopkins is 22-of-45 (.489) from beyond the arc. In addition, the 93 points match Hopkins' season-high, while the 33-point margin of victory is the largest for the Blue Jays since an 86-48 win over Dickinson on February 3, 1999.

Bethany, which played just six players, was led by John Inrig's 24-point, five-rebound effort. Dap Peoples added 13 points and Eric Wertman chipped in with 11.

Johns Hopkins will next be in action on January 9 when the Blue Jays travel to Washington College for a Centennial Conference matchup.
