WASHINGTON, DC - The Johns Hopkins volleyball team went 2-2 and placed third at the Gallaudet Tournament this weekend. The Blue Jays went 1-1 on both Friday and Saturday and are now 15-16 on the year.
On Friday, JHU fell to host Gallaudet in five games (25-30, 25-30, 30-26, 30-16, 15-17) before rebounding for a 3-1 (30-25, 27-30, 30-13, 30-23) win over Mount Aloysius. This afternoon, Hopkins was defeated by Catholic in three games (26-30, 24-30, 9-30), but responded with a sweep of Marymount (30-28, 30-21, 30-20) to finish the tournament.
Sophomore Skye Young (Salisbury, MD/James M. Bennett) earned All-Tournament honors as she totaled 39 kills, 12 digs, and four blocks in the four matches. Young led the team with 13 kills against Catholic and added 11 kills in the win over Mount Aloysius.
Several Blue Jays performed well in the tournament led by sophomore Betsy Baydala (Rockville Centre, NY/South Side), who led the team with 152 assists and added 38 digs and 11 aces. Senior Elisabeth Breese (Geneva, NY/Geneva) tallied a team-best 45 kills in the tournament and registered eight blocks.
Junior Samantha Raggi (Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill) led JHU with 13 blocks and added 32 kills, while freshman Kate O'Callaghan (Babylon, NY/West Babylon) collected a team-high 43 digs and was second on the team with 37 kills.
The Blue Jays look to improve to 5-0 in Centennial Conference play on Wednesday as Hopkins travels to face Washington College at 7:00 p.m.
