Brienza, Tarabolous Lead Hopkins To 4-1 Win Over Dickinson

Oct. 26, 2002

Baltimore, MD - JHU senior midfielder Daniel Brienza (Farmingville, NY/Sachem) and junior forward Chad Tarabolous (Tulsa, OK/Cascia Hall) each scored two goals to lead the Johns Hopkins men's soccer team to a 4-1 win over Dickinson College Saturday night at Homewood Field.

The Blue Jays, who improved to 13-2 overall and are the only unbeaten team in Centennial Conference play with a 7-0 mark, clinched a spot in the four-team league tournament on November 9-10. Dickinson fell to 5-7-2 overall and 2-3-1 in league play.

Briena scored the game-winning goal when he scored off a pass from freshman midfielder Ben Schwartz (Potomac, MD/Thomas S. Wootton) to give Hopkins a 2-1 lead with 35:39 remaining in the match. Tarabolous gave the Blue Jays a two-goal cushion just 15 seconds later by stealing the ball from a Red Devil defender and beating Dickinson goalkeeper Aaron Stemplewicz.

Tarabolous, who leads the Blue Jays with 19 goals and 41 points, added his second goal in the 63rd minute with a one-timer off a feed from senior midfielder Adam Hack (Staten Island, NY/Curtis).

Brienza put Hopkins on the board just 3:39 into the contest by scoring from six yards out off a cross from freshman forward Steve Read (Skillman, NJ/The Lawrenceville School), but Dickinson would even the match in the 24th minute when Drew Chafetz headed a long ball by Mike Senkowski past JHU goalkeeper Gary Kane, Jr. (Lansdale, PA/LaSalle College).

Hopkins, which out-shot Dickinson 22-2, returns to action Wednesday when the Blue Jays play their final home match of the season against No. 3 Gettysburg College at 7 p.m.
