BALTIMORE, Md. -- Junior forward Chad Tarabolous (Tulsa, OK/Cascia Hall) scored his second goal of the game at the 68:01 mark to break a 4-4 tie and senior forward Matt Weill (Merrick, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) scored on a direct kick in the 85th minute to provide the insurance as Johns Hopkins knocked off Gettysburg, 6-4 in Centennial Conference men's soccer action at Homewood Field Wednesday night. The win is the eighth straight for the Blue Jays, who improve to 14-2 overall and 8-0 in the Centennial Conference. Gettysburg lost for the third time in its last four games and slips to 12-3-2, 6-2.
Gettysburg took control of the game early with two goals in the first 16 minutes. Senior forward Mike Sarbaugh (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown) scored at the 11:50 mark off a scramble in front of the net and Andrew Maynard (Reading, PA/Exeter) tallied just over four minutes later off a giveaway by the Hopkins defense to make it 2-0.
Hopkins carried a 3-2 lead into halftime as the Blue Jays netted three goals in a span of just over 13 minutes midway through the first half to erase the 2-0 deficit. Senior midfielder Adam Hack (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) scored his 10th goal of the season off an indirect kick just over two minutes after Maynard's goal to make it 2-1 and freshman Jeff Grosser (Beach Haven, NJ/Shawnee) scored four minutes later when Gettysburg goalie Steve Kopp (Upper Montclair, NJ/Montclair) failed to cleanly handle a long shot from Johns Hopkins defender Greg Mangels (Glenside, PA/Cheltenham) and Grosser poked home the rebound. Tarabolous scored his first goal of the game in the 31st minute when he beat Kopp to the far side off a nice through-ball from sophomore Chris Brown (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin).
The 3-2 lead didn't last long in the second half for the Blue Jays as Gettysburg's Ryan Franks (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) scored off a rebound just 45 seconds into the second half to make it 3-3. The Bullets took a 4-3 lead in the 58th minute when Mike Bruno (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna) headed home a corner kick from Dave Pone (Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown). That lead would last for just over three minutes as the Blue Jays tied the game at 4-4 in the 61st minute when Rob Morrison (Malibu, CA/Loyola) scored from 35 yards out. Morrison sent a ball from the right flank to the far post and Kopp failed to handle the ball cleanly on the wet turf and slipped inside the far post for the equalizer. That set the stage for the Tarabolous game-winner seven minutes later.
Hopkins, which won its 28th consecutive regular season Centennial Conference game, got five saves from sophomore goalie Gary Kane (Lansdale, PA/LaSalle Catholic) and outshot Gettysburg, 24-9.
Kopp, who had allowed just eight goals all season entering the game, registered eight saves and the first five Hopkins goals before leaving the game in the 78th minute.
Johns Hopkins will play at Franklin & Marshall on Saturday in what amounts to a playoff game for the top seed in the upcoming Centennial Conference Tournament. Which ever team wins the game will be the number one seed, while the loser will be the number two seed. The tournament is scheduled to take place on the campus of the number one seed on November 9-10.
