ALLENTOWN, PA - Junior outside hitter Stephanie Kaliades (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) totaled 35 kills and just six errors in two matches to lead the Johns Hopkins volleyball team wins over Muhlenberg and Swarthmore in a Centennial Conference tri-match today at Muhlenberg. The Blue Jays defeated the Mules, 3-2 (27-30, 30-15, 30-21, 24-30, 15-9) and followed that with a 3-0 (30-11, 30-21, 30-26) sweep of Swarthmore to improve to 12-14 overall and 3-0 in the Centennial Conference.
Kaliades, who leads Hopkins with 341 kills on the year, led a strong group of hitters against Muhlenberg as she totaled 20 kills against one error in 44 attack attempts. Senior Elisabeth Breese (Geneva, NY/Geneva) (11 kills, one error), junior Samantha Raggi (Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill) (12 kills, two errors), and freshman Kate O'Callaghan (Babylon, NY/West Babylon) (10 kills, one error) contributed solid efforts as JHU combined for 67 kills and just 12 errors for a .346 hitting percentage.
Sophomore setter Betsy Baydala (Rockville Centre, NY/South Side) collected a team-high 17 digs and added 44 assists. O'Callaghan was second on the team with 12 digs. Kaliades' 341 kills place her seventh on the single-season record list for most kills in a season.
In the second match versus Swarthmore, Kaliades led the squad with 15 kills, while Breese added 12 and freshman Jen Hajj (Boca Raton, FL/Pope John Paul IV) tallied 11 kills against just three errors. Freshman Monica McDonough (Merrimack, NH/Merrimack) totaled a career-high 24 assists to go with eight digs and two blocks. The Blue Jays combined for 53 kills and a .264 hitting percentage.
The Blue Jays look to start 4-0 in the conference as Hopkins returns to action Wednesday against Bryn Mawr at 7:00 p.m.
