BALTIMORE, MD - Senior center Kathy Darling (Milford, DE/Milford) scored a game-high 29 points and sophomore forward Ashanna Randall (Media, PA/Penncrest) added a career-high 20 points to lead Johns Hopkins past Goucher College, 75-63 in non-conference women's basketball tonight in Goldfarb Gymnasium.
The Blue Jays improve to 2-1 on the season as head coach Nancy Funk earned the 400th victory of her career. Funk sports a 400-223 (.642) record in 26 years of coaching, including a 274-134 (.671) mark in her 17th season at Hopkins. She became the ninth active Division III head coach to reach 400 wins.
The first half featured six ties and three lead changes before Hopkins took a 32-31 lead into the break. The Blue Jays opened the second half on a 10-0 run to take a 42-31 lead with 16:52 remaining in the game and stretched the margin to 14 on several occasions. After JHU took a 59-45 lead with 8:26 left in the contest, Goucher went on a 13-6 run to cut the margin to seven with 3:02 remaining. Hopkins responded with a 10-2 run to put the game out of reach.
Darling scored 18 of her 29 points after the break and hit 13 of her 24 shots for the game. Randall bettered her previous career-high by three points as she shot 7-of-13 from the field and 6-of-10 free throws. Randall added six rebounds, while Darling and sophomore Ashley Felix (Pittsburgh, PA/North Catholic) both grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
Senior guard Ashley Shepler (Tornado, WV/Charleston Catholic) added 10 points and a career-high seven rebounds, while junior guard Maureen Myers (Waverly, PA/Abington Heights) registered a career-high seven assists.
Junior Kate Guggino led the Gophers with 24 points and seven rebounds, while freshman Stacy Hollander and junior Stephanie Tolbert added 12 and 10 points, respectively.
The Blue Jays return to action Sunday as Hopkins hosts Roanoke at 2:00 p.m.
