ALLENTOWN, PA - Senior Jill Minger (Durham, OR/St. Mary's) scored the game-winning goal and sophomore Kathleen Turley (New Hyde Park, NY/New Hyde Park) added a goal and an assist to lead the Johns Hopkins women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Franklin & Marshall in the Centennial Conference semifinals this afternoon in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
The Blue Jays improved to 13-5-2 overall and advance to the championship game against No. 4 seed Gettysburg on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The Bullets advanced to the championship by upsetting No. 1 seed Muhlenberg, 1-0 in overtime in the first semifinal of the day. JHU defeated Gettysburg, 3-2 in double overtime last week in the final regular season game.
Minger scored her second goal of the season and 20th of her career off a feed from Turley in the 70th minute. Her shot deflected off the goalie's hands and into the net to give JHU a 2-0 lead. Turley opened the scoring in the 63rd minute on a break away with her team-leading eighth goal of the year. Heather Rice scored in the 72nd minute for Franklin & Marshall to close the gap to 2-1.
Senior Shannon O'Malley (Greenlawn, NY/Long Island Lutheran) made the margin stand as she made five saves for Hopkins. Melissa Ruff stopped eight Blue Jay shots for the Diplomats.
Minger's goal moved her into third place at Hopkins in career points (56) and fourth in career goals (20). She is also first in school history in career assists (16). O'Malley moved within 12 saves of tying the school record of 251 career saves.
