Hopkins Defeats Gettysburg, 66-52 in Centennial Opener

BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team used a 20-0 run over a six minute span at the end of the first half and the beginning of the second half to take a commanding lead en route to a 66-52 win over Gettysburg this evening in Goldfarb Gymnasium. The Blue Jays (5-1) won their fourth straight overall and their eighth consecutive Centennial Conference opener, while Gettysburg fell to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in CC play.

The game was close through the first 17 minutes of the opening period as the teams were tied at 28-28 after five ties and six lead changes. Senior guard Ashley Shepler (Tornado, WV/Charleston Catholic) broke the tie with a three pointer on an assist from sophomore forward Kelly Rumsey (Atlanta, GA/Marist School), which led to the 20-0 run.

Sophomore forward Ashanna Randall (Media, PA/Penncrest) scored five points and senior center Kathy Darling (Milford, DE/Milford) tallied six points in the run as Hopkins extended a 38-28 halftime lead to a 46-28 advantage with 16:49 remaining. Freshman Jen Bengel (Timonium, MD/Roland Park Country) capped a 13-3 run by Gettysburg with a layup that cut the margin to 64-52, but the Bullets would get no closer.

Darling led all scorers with 18 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, while registering three blocks. She has scored at least 18 points in five of JHU's six games. Randall and sophomore guard Ashley Felix (Pittsburgh, PA/North Catholic) joined Darling in double figures with 12 points apiece, while Randall collected eight rebounds and six steals. Shepler contributed eight points and a game-high five assists, while Felix added four assists and four steals.

Bengel recorded a double-double for Gettysburg with 12 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. She was joined in double figures by freshman Jamie Marshall (Pottsville, PA/Nativity B.V.M.) who scored 10 points, while freshman Katie Eiden (Silver Spring, MD/Georgetown Visitation) chipped in with nine points.

The Blue Jays return to action Saturday as Hopkins travels to Arlington, Virginia to face Marymount University at 2:00 p.m. in a non-conference game.
