BALTIMORE, MD - Senior center Kathy Darling (Milford, DE/Milford) scored a game-high 22 points and sophomore guard Alissa Burkholder (Allentown, PA/Salisbury) added a career-high 18 points to lead Johns Hopkins to a 77-56 win over 22nd-ranked Christopher Newport in non-conference women's basketball action this afternoon at Goldfarb Gymnasium.
The Blue Jays (4-1) held a 15-13 lead with 11:55 remaining in the first half before Hopkins went on an 18-0 run capped by a Burkholder three pointer to increase the lead to 33-13 at the 7:37 mark. JHU hit 6-of-10 three pointers in the opening half to take a 42-27 halftime lead. Hopkins extended the lead to 67-41 on a layup by Darling and Christopher Newport would not get closer than 15 points the rest of the game.
Burkholder made 6-of-11 shots from the field and also tied her career-highs for rebounds (7) and assists (4). Darling was 10-for-13 from the field and collected seven rebounds. The Blue Jays shot 46 percent (28-for-60) as a team and improved to 4-0 this season when shooting above 45 percent.
Senior guard Ashley Shepler (Tornado, WV/Charleston Catholic) scored a season-high 13 points and added a game-high seven assists for Hopkins, while sophomore forward Ashanna Randall (Media, PA/Penncrest) scored seven points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds. Junior guard Maureen Myers (Waverly, PA/Abington Heights) and sophomore guard Ashley Felix (Pittsburgh, PA/North Catholic) each totaled seven points.
Senior Tia Moore led Christopher Newport with 17 points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds. She was joined in double figures for by junior Tomorrow Lofton and senior Jen Harrell with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Lofton added 10 rebounds, four assists, and two blocks.
Hopkins returns to action Wednesday, December 11 as the Blue Jays open Centennial Conference action at home versus Gettysburg at 7:00 p.m.
