WESTMINSTER, MD - Western Maryland College used a balanced scoring attack and solid defense to defeat Johns Hopkins, 73-59, tonight in Centennial Conference women's basketball action at the Gill Center in Westminster, Maryland. The win moves the Green Terror (17-6, 9-4 CC) into a tie with the Blue Jays (18-6, 9-4 CC) for second place in the West Division of the Centennial with one regular season game remaining.
With the score tied 12-12 with 13:46 left in the first half, junior Jen Piccolomini hit a three pointer to spark a 15-6 run as the Green Terror took a 27-18 lead at the 8:30 mark. Piccolomini, who scored a team-high 15 points, would add two more three pointers as Western Maryland extended its lead to 41-29 at halftime. The Blue Jays would cut the deficit to 54-49 with 8:31 left in the game, but Western Maryland responded with a 6-1 run to pull away.
Junior center Kathy Darling (Milford, DE/Milford) scored a game-high 22 points, her third straight game with over 20 points, and added seven rebounds. Senior forward Heidi Sumser (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg) and freshman forward Alissa Burkholder (Allentown, PA/Salisbury) chipped in with eight and seven points, respectively. Junior guard Ashley Shepler (Tornado, WV/Charleston Catholic) tallied seven assists for JHU.
Freshman Kelly Cramp and junior Stephanie McPherson joined Piccolomini in double figures for Western Maryland with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Sophomore Toby McIntire recorded a game-high eight assists to go with five points, six rebounds, and three steals. The Green Terror outrebounded Hopkins 46-37 and forced 23 Blue Jay Turnovers.
The Blue Jays return home to conclude the regular season against Franklin & Marshall on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. The Diplomats topped Hopkins 71-70 earlier in the year with a basket in the final three seconds.
