WESTMINSTER, MD - Junior center Kris Brust hit two free throws with 2.1 seconds remaining to lead Western Maryland women's basketball team past Johns Hopkins in a Centennial Conference tie-breaker game tonight in Westminster. The Blue Jays finish the season with a 19-7 record, while Western Maryland (20-6) advances to the Centennial playoffs as the No. 2 seed in the West Division.
After being down 38-28 at halftime, Hopkins stormed back to take a 64-62 lead on a basket by junior center Kathy Darling (Milford, DE/Milford) with 7:09 remaining. Sophomore guard Maureen Myers (Waverly, PA/Abington Heights) added a jumper before Western Maryland tied the score at 66-66 with 5:03 left as sophomore Toby McIntire hit three free throws.
Darling put the Blue Jays up 68-66 at the 3:17 mark, but Brust hit a short hook shot to tie the game with 1:45 remaining. Hopkins missed a short jumper with under 25 seconds remaining before Brust rebounded a Green Terror miss and was fouled in the final seconds. JHU had one last chance, but a three pointer fell short at the buzzer.
Hopkins led 9-8 at the 15:01 mark of the first half before Western Maryland went on a 9-0 run to take a 17-9 lead with 12:06 remaining in the half. JHU closed the gap to 23-20, but the Green Terror responded with a 15-8 run to take a 10-point lead at the break.
Darling led all scorers with 22 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field. Junior guard Ashley Shepler (Tornado, WV/Charleston Catholic) scored a season-high 16 points and tallied a game-high four assists to reach 100 for the season. Freshman guard Ashley Felix (Pittsburgh, PA/North Catholic) and Myers also scored in double figures for Hopkins with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Freshman Kelly Cramp led three players in double figures for Western Maryland with 15 points. McIntire and junior Jen Piccolomini added 13 points each, while McIntire also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
