Swarthmore Outlasts Hopkins, 85-82, in Double Overtime

BALTIMORE, MD - Sophomore guard Katie Robinson set a career-high and Swarthmore single-game record with 40 points to lead the Garnet to a thrilling 85-82 double-overtime win over Johns Hopkins tonight in Centennial Conference women's basketball action. With the win, Swarthmore improves to 17-5 overall and 10-2 in the Centennial, while Hopkins falls to 17-5 overall and 8-3 in conference play.

With seven seconds left in regulation after a missed Swarthmore free throw, junior guard Ashley Shepler (Tornado, WV/Charleston Catholic) drove and hit a layup to tie the score at 69. The Blue Jays managed to take a three-point lead in the first overtime before Robinson hit a three pointer to tie the score at 76 with 35 second remaining. JHU missed two free throws before Swarthmore's last second shot missed the target.

In the second overtime, the score was tied once again at 82 with 1:00 remaining. After a JHU miss, freshman guard Alison Wolff hit one of two free throws to give the Garnet an 83-82 lead with 25 seconds left. Two turnovers by Hopkins and two free throws by Swarthmore set the final score at 85-82 as a last second three pointer from JHU failed to hit its mark.

Robinson shot 15-of-27 from the field and 9-of-12 from the line for her record-setting total. She also grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds and tallied eight steals in 49 minutes. Senior forward Heather Kile added 25 points and 14 rebounds for Swarthmore, while Alison Furman chipped in with 10 points.

Sophomore guard Maureen Myers (Waverly, PA/Abington Heights) led Hopkins with a career-high 24 points and seven rebounds. Junior center Kathy Darling (Milford, DE/Milford) added 21 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

The Blue Jays host Dickinson College at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday in the second game of the "Coaches vs. Cancer" doubleheader benefiting the American Cancer Society.
