Hopkins Falls to #12 Messiah, 1-0, in Double Overtime

Sept. 11, 2002

Box Score

BALTIMORE, MD - Mindy Miller scored off a pass from Jamie Gasiorowski in the 105th minute to give 12th ranked Messiah a 1-0 double-overtime win against Johns Hopkins this evening in non-conference women's soccer action. The Blue Jays had their six-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 3-1 with the loss, while the Falcons remain unbeaten at 4-0.

After an evenly matched first half, the best chance for a goal in regulation came in the 59th minute on a penalty shot for Messiah. Senior goalkeeper Shannon O'Malley (Greenlawn, NY/Long Island Lutheran) was up to the challenge as she made a diving stop on Holly Shifflett's drive to the lower right corner. O'Malley made five saves on the evening, while Maggie Futato made four saves for the Falcons.

Messiah, which outshot Hopkins 12-9 for the game, could have put the game away in the first overtime, but the Falcons hit the crossbar with one shot and followed with a shot off the post.

The Blue Jays return to action Saturday at the Roanoke Tournament in Roanoke, Virginia. JHU will face St. Benedict's (MN) on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. and then play either LaVerne (CA) or Roanoke on Sunday.
