ROANOKE, VA - The Johns Hopkins women's soccer team fell to 21st ranked Roanoke College, 3-1, this afternoon in the championship game of the Comfort Suites Women's Soccer Showcase in Salem, Virginia. The loss drops the Blue Jays to 3-2-1 on the season, while Roanoke improved to 5-0 on the year.

Roanoke's Jill Hoffmeister scored the first of her two goals off a feed from Melissa Impink to give the Maroons a 1-0 halftime advantage. Taylor Howe added an unassisted goal 17 minutes into the second half as Roanoke took a 2-0 lead.

Junior Erinn Sosa (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) closed the gap to 2-1 on an unassisted goal, her second of the season in the 71st minute. Hoffmeister responded with her second goal of the game five minutes later to give Roanoke an insurmountable 3-1 lead with 14 minutes remaining.

Senior Shannon O'Malley (Greenlawn, NY/Long Island Lutheran) made two saves for Hopkins, while Jess Simmers stopped eight JHU shots on the day. The Blue Jays outshot the Maroons 13-7 and held a 7-2 advantage on corner kicks.

JHU advanced to the championship game by defeating St. Benedict's Saturday on penalty kicks. After Jessica DeLoy put the Blazers up 1-0 with 15 minutes remaining in the game, sophomore Chi Chi Ogbonna (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley Central) tied the score in the 81st minute with her first career goal.

After neither team was able to score in overtime, the game advanced to penalty kicks. Both teams made their first three penalty kicks, but after Jill Minger (Durham, OR/St. Mary's) hit the fourth try for JHU, the St. Benedict's attempt went wide. Sosa sealed the victory with the final penalty kick for Hopkins.

The Blue Jays return to action Wednesday, September 18 as JHU travels to face the College of Notre Dame (MD) at 4:30 p.m.
