LANCASTER, PA - The Johns Hopkins volleyball team opened the season by finishing fourth with a 1-2 record at the Franklin & Marshall Tournament on Saturday. The Blue Jays defeated MIT in five games to open the tournament before falling to Eastern, 3-1, and to Franklin & Marshall, 3-1, in the third-place match.
In the win over MIT, junior Stephanie Kaliades (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) led JHU with 15 kills, while senior Elisabeth Breese (Geneva, NY/Geneva) added 12 kills and five blocks. Freshman Kate O'Callaghan (Babylon, NY/West Babylon) totaled a team-high eight aces to go with 15 digs and eight kills. Freshman Colby Perkins (Manhattan Beach, CA/Mira Costa) led Hopkins with 23 digs and sophomore Betsy Baydala (Rockville Centre, NY/South Side) recorded a team-high 21 assists.
Perkins also led the team in digs against Eastern with 29, while Baydala tallied a team-high 21 assists. Freshman Jen Hajj (Boca Raton, FL/Pope John Paul IV) recorded 13 kills to lead the Blue Jays, and O'Callaghan totaled nine kills, six digs, and three aces.
Baydala led JHU with nine kills against Franklin & Marshall and added 11 digs. Breese and Kaliades each chipped in with eight kills, while O'Callaghan tallied seven kills and 11 digs. Perkins collected a team-high 15 digs, and senior Courtney Cromwell (Westbury, NY/Carle Place) led JHU with 17 assists.
The Blue Jays return to action Wednesday, September 4 as JHU welcomes Catholic for a non-conference match at 7:00 p.m.
