Baltimore, MD - Six different Blue Jays scored goals as the Johns Hopkins men's soccer team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 6-1 win over Goucher in the first match of the JHU Alumni Invitational Saturday afternoon at Homewood Field. Bridgewater won the second match of the day, 4-0, over Centenary.
Hopkins took the early lead when senior midfielder Adam Hack (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) headed home a corner kick by senior defender Greg Mangels (Glenside, PA/Cheltenham) in the 10th minute, but the Gophers answered five minutes later when Brian Concklin took a pass from Greg Dengler and beat JHU goalkeeper Nicholas Challen (Southborough, MA/Algonquin Regional) to tie the match at one.
However, just 36 seconds after Concklin's goal Hopkins sophomore midfielder Chris Brown (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) took a feed from senior midfielder Daniel Brienza (Farmingville, NY/Sachem) and scored to give Hopkins the lead back for good. Less than two minutes later, sophomore midfielder Doug Pollack (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) ripped a shot that Goucher goalkeeper Damon Highsmith stopped but could not control, and junior forward Chad Tarabolous (Tulsa, OK/Cascia Hall) knocked in the rebound as the Blue Jays took a 3-1 lead.
The match would then settle down, and Hopkins retained its two-goal advantage until freshman defender Jeff Grosser (Beach Haven, NJ/Shawnee) scored his first career goal in the 54th minute. The Blue Jays then added two goals in the 89th minute, as freshman forward Steve Read (Skillman, NJ/The Lawrenceville School) headed in a corner kick by fellow newcomer Aaron Blynn (Winston-Salem, NC/Forsyth Country Day) and Blynn scored an unassisted goal just 19 seconds later.
Challen did not have to make a save in the JHU win, as Hopkins out-shot the Gophers, 28-1, and held a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks.
In the second match of the invitational, Bridgewater forward Matt Brock scored two goals while John Williamson and Justin Gilliam each added one as the Eagles defeated Centenary, 4-0. Bridgewater held a 26-2 advantage in shots as Eagle goalkeepers Jon Boller and Isiah Munoz combined on the shutout.
The invitational continues Sunday, as Hopkins hosts Centenary at 1 p.m. and Bridgewater takes on Goucher at 3 p.m.
