Hopkins Stays Perfect in the Centennial; Defeats Washington, 86-61

BALTIMORE, MD - Senior center Kathy Darling (Milford, DE/Milford) scored a game-high 21 points and sophomore Ashanna Randall (Media, PA/Penncrest) recorded her first career double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead Johns Hopkins past Washington College, 86-61 this evening in Centennial Conference women's basketball action.

The Blue Jays improved to 9-3 overall and 3-0 in the conference, while the Shorewomen fell to 2-9 overall and 0-3 in CC action.

Hopkins opened the game on a 17-5 run in the first 5:50 behind six points from Randall and five from Darling. Senior guard Ashley Shepler (Tornado, WV/Charleston Catholic) scored consecutive layups to give JHU a 42-22 with 2:51 remaining in the opening half. Washington then went 10-0 run as Yianna Patronas hit two three pointers and Karen Simos added a three pointer to close the gap to 42-32 at the break.

Meghan Hartzell opened the second half with a layup to cut the lead to eight points, but the Blue Jays answered with a 14-0 run to take a commanding 56-34 lead at the 16:18 mark. Washington College would not get closer than 20 points the rest of the contest.

Darling was 9-of-10 from the field as she scored over 20 points for the fourth time this season. Randall was 7-of-10 from the field and added two blocks and three steals in 21 minutes. JHU shot 43.8 percent from the field and improved to 9-0 when shooting better than 40 percent. The Blue Jays limited Washington to 27.8 percent shooting for the game and forced 22 turnovers.

Sophomore guard Alissa Burkholder (Allentown, PA/Salisbury) scored 11 points and totaled three assists, while Shepler also reached double figures with 10 points and registered three assists to move into fourth place at Hopkins with 309 career assists. Sophomore guard Ashley Felix (Pittsburgh, PA/North Catholic) recorded a team-high five assists and added seven points and eight rebounds.

Junior guard Maureen Myers (Waverly, PA/Abington Heights) scored four points to move into 20th place on JHU's career scoring list with 528 points.

Patronas and Katie Piringer led Washington with 14 points each, while Simos added 12 points. Piringer grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, while Patronas led the Shorewomen with five assists.

The Blue Jays return to action Thursday as Hopkins travels to face Bryn Mawr at 7:00 p.m.
