BALTIMORE, Md. -- Freshman Jessica McKenzie (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) tucked a 30-yard blast just under the crossbar just over five minutes into overtime to lift the Johns Hopkins women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over visiting Dickinson Tuesday night. The win, Hopkins' third straight, improves JHU's record to 12-5-1 and 6-3 in the Centennial Conference. Dickinson slips to 9-6-1, 5-4. The victory also clinches a spot in the Centennial Conference Tournament for Hopkins, which won last year's tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
McKenzie collected a pass from junior Sandra Lebo (Princeton Junction, NJ/W. Windsor Plainsboro) along the sideline and blasted a shot at goal. Dickinson goalie Alanna Schechtman (New Hope, PA/New Hope-Solebury) was helpless as the ball sailed just over her outstretched arms and under the crossbar for the game-winner.
Dickinson appeared to have control of the game after senior Alyssa Carlow (McLean, VA/McLean) scored twice in a span of 14 minutes midway through the second half to give the Red Devils a 2-1 lead. She tallied her first goal at the 53:38 mark after chasing down a loose ball and beating a defenseless Jen Goebel (Jericho, NY/Jericho), who had come off her line, but was caught in the middle of the penalty area when Carlow shot into the vacant net.
Carlow gave Dickinson a 2-1 lead when she headed home a loose ball in the box at the 67:28 mark. Dickinson freshman Tara Goss (Sandy Spring, MD/Sandy Springs Friends) was the last player to head the ball before Carlow and collected an assist on the play.
Hopkins forced overtime when freshman Lauren Baumann (Milford, MI/Greenmills School) scored her fifth goal of the season at the 82:14 mark. Freshman Nikkole Haines (Ramona, CA/Ramona) sent the ball into the box from near midfield and Schechtman failed to handle the ball cleanly in the rainy conditions and Baumann scored into an open net. Sophomore Meg McIntosh's (Los Angeles, CA/Brentwood) team-leading eighth goal of the season at the 11:21 mark had given the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead.
Hopkins will close the regular season on Saturday at Franklin & Marshall, while Dickinson will host Gettysburg on Saturday in its regular-season finale.
