Hopkins Swimming Teams Each Win Three At Thomas Murphy Invitational

Baltimore, MD - The Johns Hopkins men's and women's swimming teams each posted wins over Howard, Loyola, and McDaniel at the Thomas Murphy Invitational this Friday and Saturday.

The Blue Jay men, who improved to 4-2 on the season, defeated the Bison, 239-35, the host Greyhounds, 199-120, and the Green Terror, 236-50. The JHU women, now 4-1 on the year, topped Howard, 245-54, Loyola, 209-121, and McDaniel, 242-56.

Junior Jon Kleinman (North Oaks, MN/Mounds View) won the 400 individual medley in 4:11.83 and the 100 backstroke in 56.19 for the Hopkins men, while sophomore Matt Chana (Northbrook, IL/Glenbrook North) took the 1650 freestyle in 16:11.77 and the 500 freestyle in 4:42.52.

Sophomore Tyler Harris (Lancaster, OH/Lancaster) captured the 50 freestyle in 21.79 and the 100 breaststroke in 59.73, while senior Kyle Robinson (Holden, MA/Wachusett Regional) won the 100 freestyle in 47.32 and the 200 freestyle in 1:44.25. Junior J.P. Balfour (Plano, TX/Plano East) took the 200 backstroke in 1:56.09.

The JHU 200 freestyle relay team of Robinson, Harris, junior Paul Zalewski (St. Louis, MO/Kirkwood), and freshman Kevin Walsh (Athens, GA/Cedar Shoals) won its race in 1:26.55, while the 200 medley relay team of Balfour, Harris, sophomore Brian Sneed (Chattanooga, TN/McCallie) and Robinson won in 1:35.99.

The Blue Jay women were led by sophomore Sida Liu (Phoenix, AZ/North Canyon), who took the 200 butterfly in 2:09.10, the 100 butterfly in 59.59, and the 100 backstroke in 1:00.11. Sophomore Abiona Redwood (Kingston, Jamaica/St. Andrew) captured the 50 freestyle in 25.17 and the 100 freestyle in 54.72, while fellow sophomore Carly Benner (Stockton, CA/Lincoln) won the 1650 freestyle in 18:11.56.

Freshman Ariana Reks (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) took the 500 freestyle in 5:24.46, sophomore Jessica Chang (Penfield, NY/Penfield) won the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.52, and freshman Allie Foster (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley Central) captured the 200 breaststroke in 2:25.35.

The Hopkins 200 freestyle relay team of freshman Ashley Devonshire (Pittsburgh, PA/Hampton), freshman Kelly Robinson (Holden, MA/Worcester Academy), Liu, and Redwood took its event in 1:40.89, while the 800 freestyle relay team of Reks, junior Diana Smirnova (Las Cruces, NM/Phillips Exeter Academy), sophomore Katie Herbst (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford), and Foster won in 5:24.46.

Both Blue Jay teams return to action on December 5-7 when they travel to Oxford, OH, to compete in the Miami of Ohio Invitational.
