CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team improved to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the Centennial Conference with a 71-43 victory over host Washington College Tuesday night. The Blue Jays used a 20-0 run that bridged the first and second halves and a balanced scoring attack to fuel the victory, which improves JHU's all-time record to 14-0 against the Shorewomen.
Washington led 10-7 after a layup by Kathryn Zajac with 11:27 remaining in the first half, but Hopkins closed the half with a 16-0 run to carry a 23-10 lead into intermission and scored the first four points of the second half to push the lead to 27-10. Senior forward Trista Snyder (West Chester, PA/Unionville) scored eight of her team-high 10 points during the run for the Blue Jays.
Washington cut the deficit to 15 twice in the opening minutes of the second half, only to see the Blue Jays respond each time. Hopkins later had a 17-7 run that pushed the lead to 50-24 and the Shorewomen were never closer than 20 in the final 12 minutes of the game.
Snyder's 10 points led the way for Hopkins, which also got nine points and five rebounds from freshman Julie Miller (Annandale, VA/Thomas Jefferson), eight points and nine rebounds from junior Ashanna Randall (Media, PA/Penncrest) and seven points, eight assists and eight steals from junior Ashley Felix (Pittsburgh, PA/North Catholic).
Washington was led by Karen Simos, who had 14 points and four rebounds, but the Shorewomen committed 21 turnovers, connected on just 14-of-58 (.241) shots from the field and were out-rebounded, 55-45.
