Baltimore, MD - The Johns Hopkins wrestling team opened its 2003-04 season Saturday with a pair of losses, as the Blue Jays fell to Wilkes, 24-18, and to York, 22-15, in the White Athletic Center.

York defeated Wilkes, 21-15, in the afternoon's other meet, as all three teams began their seasons Saturday.

Senior 165 Tim Wagner (Spencer, IA/Spencer) led the Blue Jays by pinning Alessandro Plutino of Wilkes with 1:27 remaining in the first period and pinning Jason Wagner of York with 42 seconds remaining in the first period. Junior 197 Tony Dambro (Glen Mills, PA/Garnet Valley) also posted two wins for Hopkins, as he pinned Diego Alvarado of Wilkes with 55.7 seconds remaining in the second period and recording an 8-4 decision over Drew Baldauf of York.

Sophomore 174 David Kraus (Potomac, MD/Churchill) earned a 4-2 decision over Fritz Delva while junior heavyweight David de Garavilla (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) posted a 5-3 decision in overtime over Andrew Steinberg, as the Blue Jays won four of 10 matches against Wilkes.

Hopkins also posted four victories over York, as freshman 125 Jim Vandaniker (Baltimore, MD/Perry Hall) earned a 5-3 overtime decision over Joshua Barrick and senior heavyweight Karol Gryczynski (Ellicott City, MD/Mount Hebron) recorded a 3-2 double-overtime decision over Tom Steffen.

The Blue Jays return to action next Saturday, November 15, when Hopkins competes in the Monarch Tournament in Wilkes-Barre, PA at 11 a.m.
