Darling and Shepler Lead Hopkins Past Gettysburg, 71-57

GETTYSBURG, PA - Senior Kathy Darling (Milford, DE/Milford) scored her 1,500th career point and senior guard Ashley Shepler (Tornado, WV/Charleston Catholic) moved into third place at Hopkins in career assists as the Johns Hopkins women's basketball team defeated Gettysburg, 71-57 tonight in Centennial Conference action in Bream Gymnasium.

The Blue Jays, who defeated Gettysburg for the sixth straight time and the 15th time in the last 16 meetings, improved to 14-5 overall and 8-1 in conference play with their third consecutive win. The Bullets had their four-game winning streak snapped and fell to 14-6 overall and 6-4 in CC action.

Shepler, who scored 11 of her season-high 16 points in the first half, nailed two three pointers to help JHU grab an 11-4 lead in the first 4:23 of the game. Gettysburg cut the margin to 18-15 with 10:15 remaining, but the Blue Jays answered with a 22-6 run to take a 40-21 lead into halftime. Hopkins was 7-of-11 from beyond the three-point arc in the opening period.

Darling scored 13 of her game-high 19 points in the second half as the Blue Jays increased the lead to as much as 24 points before settling for the 14-point win. Her first bucket of the second half gave her 1,501 points for her career. She scored 770 points in her first two seasons at Rowan and has 742 points now in her second year at Hopkins. Darling added 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.

With a game-high seven assists, Shepler moved past Juliane Rolapp for third place at Hopkins with 343 career assists. With 18 more assists, she can move into fifth place in the Centennial Conference for career assists. Shepler was 5-for-7 from the field, including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc.

Sophomore guard Ashley Felix (Pittsburgh, PA/North Catholic) joined Darling and Shepler in double figures with 10 points and was 3-for-3 on three pointers for the game. Sophomore forward Ashanna Randall (Media, PA/Penncrest) added eight points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while junior guard Maureen Myers (Waverly, PA/Abington Heights) chipped in with seven points.

Elizabeth Ross led the Bullets with 16 points, while Jen Bengel added 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Jay Hodge poured in eight points to go with five rebounds and three steals. Gettysburg shot just 34 percent (23-for-66) from the field, including 16 percent (3-for-18) on three pointers.

Hopkins returns to action Saturday as the Blue Jays host Muhlenberg in a Centennial Conference contest at 2:00 p.m. The Johns Hopkins women's basketball alumni game is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
