Towson, MD - Blue Jay senior attacker Meghan Burnett (Auburn, NY/Auburn) scored three goals and added two assists as the No. 16 Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team won its fifth straight game with a 12-5 victory at Towson University Wednesday afternoon.
The Blue Jays, who improved to 11-4 and have won their last five by an average of eight goals per game, got three goals from junior midfielder Kate Barcomb (Middlebury, VT/Middlebury) while junior midfielder Heidi Pearce (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew's) added a goal and two assists. Towson, which fell to 7-8 this season, was led by CAA Rookie of the Year Becky Trumbo, who scored two goals and assisted on another.
Despite carrying most of the play in the first half, the Blue Jays led just 4-3 at the break. However, Hopkins out-scored the Tigers 8-2 in the second half to pull away.
Pearce found freshman midfielder Kelley Putnam (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) for a goal with 25:10 left in the game to put Hopkins up by two, and after Burnett forced a turnover by Towson goalkeeper Jessica O'Connell, Pearce picked up the loose ball and found Burnett in front for a goal to make it a 6-3 game with 21:25 remaining.
Burnett then assisted on a goal by freshman attacker Sarah Walsh (Port Washington, NY/P.D. Schreiber) at the 18:23 mark, but Towson answered as Erin Cayea scored off a feed from Trumbo to cut the Hopkins lead to 7-4 with 17:14 to play.
However, Burnett scored an unassisted goal at the 9:37 mark and Barcomb added an unassisted goal less than two minutes later to make it a 9-4 game with 7:50 remaining.
After Caitlin Marshall cut the Blue Jay advantage to four with an unassisted goal with 7:28 left, Pearce scored an unassisted goal at the 5:42 mark and Burnett found senior midfielder Erinn Dennis (Wilton, NY/Saratoga Springs) for a goal with 2:44 remaining. Freshman attacker Meagan Voight (Sykesville, MD/Liberty) then capped the scoring by beating O'Connell with a behind-the-back shot with 55 seconds to play.
Hopkins held a commanding 44-12 advantage in shots and collected a season-high 54 ground balls. O'Connell made 17 saves in the Tigers goal, while senior Jen McDonald (Garden City, NY/Garden City) stopped four shots for the Blue Jays.
Barcomb put the Blue Jays on the board first with an unassisted goal just 21 seconds into the game, and she gave Hopkins a 2-0 lead by scoring off an assist from Putnam at the 27:45 mark.
Burnett made it a 3-0 game with an unassisted goal with 17:37 remaining before Martha Dwyer and Trumbo scored for the Tigers to cut the JHU lead to one. After Dennis scored an unassisted goal with 5:06 left, Trumbo scored with 18 seconds left in the half to make it a 4-3 game at the break.
Hopkins concludes its regular season Saturday when the Blue Jays travel to George Mason for a 1 p.m. game.
