BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins volleyball team was defeated by Frostburg State, 3-0, in the inaugural Asics Maryland Division III Collegiate State Volleyball Tournament on Saturday at Goldsfarb gymnasium. The Blue Jays earned a spot in the championship game with a win over McDaniel in the semifinal match. Hopkins finished the tournament with a 5-1 record.
FSU took all three games with scores of 30-22, 30-28, 30-25. Junior Lauren Petrick (Denton, MD/North Caroline) led the Bobcats with 15 kills and classmate Carrie Ness (Taneytown, MD/Francis Scott Key) added 22 assists. Sophomore Katie O'Callaghan (Babylon, NY/West Babylon) was a force with 11 kills and 21 digs for the Blue Jays.
Hopkins advanced to the finals with a, 3-0, victory over McDaniel in the semifinal round with scores of 30-17, 30-18, 30-24. The Blue Jays offense was paced by junior setter Betsy Baydala's (Rockville Center, NY/Southside) 26 assists. Senior outside hitter Stephanie Kaliades (Ridgwood, NJ/Ridgewood) led JHU with 16 kills in the win.
Frostburg State defeated Salisbury,3-0, in the other semifinal match with scores of 30-26, 30-19, 33-31. Petrick led FSU with 19 kills and 14 assists. Ness continued to be the catalyst on offense with an impressive 42 assists.
The Blue Jays fall to 7-4 in the season and look to rebound on Friday, September 19 when they travel to play in the Salisbury Tournament at 3:00 p.m.
