Blue Jay Water Polo Falls To Navy, 17-10

Sept. 18, 2003

Baltimore, MD - Joe Donahue scored five goals to lead the Navy water polo team to a 17-10 win over Johns Hopkins Wednesday afternoon in the White Athletic Center.

The Midshipmen, ranked No. 9 in the Division I National Collegiate Poll, jumped out to a 3-0 lead before junior driver Dan Stillman (Virginia Beach, VA/Suffield Academy) and junior driver Brian Mead (Palo Alto, CA/Gunn) scored to pull Hopkins within one. However, Navy would score the last goal of the first quarter and the first three of the second quarter to take a 7-2 advantage before senior utility Geoff McCann (Hopewell Junction, NY/St. Francis-CA) scored for the Blue Jays.

After a Midshipmen goal Mead found the back of the net, but Navy scored the final two goals of the period to take a 10-4 lead into halftime.

The Midshipmen added to their lead by scoring the first three goals of the third quarter before JHU junior driver James Singleton (Los Angeles, CA/Harvard-Westlake), senior driver Dan Herr (Encino, CA/Harvard-Westlake), and freshman driver Ryan McCormack (Glen Head, NY/Chaminade) scored for the Blue Jays to make it a 13-7 game.

Navy answered by scoring four straight goals, and Hopkins closed the scoring with a goal by freshman driver David Strickland (Houston, TX/Strake Jesuit College Prep) and two by Stillman.

Hopkins senior goalkeeper Craig Smith (San Clemente, CA/San Clemente) made 11 field saves for the Blue Jays.

The Blue Jays, who are ranked No. 4 in the Division III National Collegiate Poll and No. 7 in the CWPA Top 10 Poll released Thursday, fell to 4-5 this season. Hopkins will face Princeton at 2:30 p.m. and Bucknell at 6 p.m. Saturday at Navy.
