Hopkins Volleyball Posts a Second Place Finish in JHU Invitational

BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins volleyball team finished as the runner-up to York College in the 2003 JHU Invitational. The Blue Jays lost the championship match, 3-2, with scores of 30-24, 28-30, 26-30, 30-23, 8-15. Hopkins finished with a tournament record of 3-1 and are now 13-5 on the season.

JHU was led by junior setter Betsy Baydala (Rockville Centre, NY/South Side) who dished out a new single match record 65 assists. Senior outside hitter Stephanie Kaliades (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) was a force with 26 kills, while sophomore outside hitter Kate O'Callaghan (Babylon, NY/West Babylon) added 20 digs. Junior setter Caitlin McIntosh (Newark, DE/Newark) led the Spartans with. 52 assists and senior outside hitter Kerry Casperson (Littleton, CO/Columbine) added 16 kills in the victory.

Hopkins was able to advance to the finals with a 3-2 win over York in the final pool play match. JHU defeated the Spartans with scores of 25-30, 30-19, 30-25, 26-30, 15-12. The Blue Jays were led by Baydala's 47 assist's and 23 digs. Kaliades had a team-high 20 kills.

JHU opened up the day with a 3-0 win over Swarthmore, with scores of 30-25. 30-23, 30-27. Baydala (36 assists) and Kaliades (13 kills) set the tone in the three game victory. Freshman Lizzie Kay (Pacific Palisades, CA/The Cate School) led the Blue Jays with 21 digs.

In the consolation match Mary Washington defeated Swarthmore, 3-0, with scores of 30-19, 31-29, 30-16. Sophomore setter Sarah Blehm (Staunton, VA/Robert E. Lee) recorded 23 assists, while senior outside hitter Lauren Eigel (Christiansburg, VA/Christiansburg) added ten kills.

Up next for the Blue Jays is their Centennial Conference opening match when they host Gettysburg on Wednesday, October 1 at 7:00 p.m.
