BALTIMORE, Md. -- The 19th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's basketball team had four players score in double figures, led by 18 points after the first eight minutes of the game and were never seriously threatened in a 95-39 win over visiting Haverford Tuesday night. The win is the third straight for the Blue Jays, who improve to 10-1 overall and 5-0 in the Centennial Conference. The Fords slip to 1-9, 0-4.
Hopkins took all the drama out of the game early as the Blue Jays sprinted out to a 15-1 lead less than five minutes into the game. Senior guard Maureen Myers (Waverly, PA/Abington Heights), who scored 12 points in the game, nailed three three-pointers during the opening spree as the Blue Jays hit 8-of-15 from beyond the arc in the opening half.
Hopkins extended the lead to 25-7 on a jumper by Amanda Leese (Amherst, NH/Bishop Guertin) with just over 12 minutes remaining before the Fords made their only run of the game. Back-to-back three pointers by Meredith Foote (Ardmore, PA/Lower Merion) and Caitie Kimura (Kamuela, HI/Hawaii Prep) closed the deficit to 27-15 with just over 10 minutes remaining, but the Blue Jays forced turnovers on five straight Haverford possessions and extended the lead to 35-15 before the Fords would score again. Hopkins led 49-20 at the half and opened the second half with a 28-4 run in the first 10 minutes to secure its 11th straight win in the series.
In addition to Myers, who made the only four shots she took in the game - all from three-point range - the Blue Jays got 14 points and five rebounds from senior Trista Snyder (West Chester, PA/Unionville), 12 points and seven rebounds from Leese and 11 points and five rebounds from junior forward Kelly Rumsey (Atlanta, GA/Marist School). The Blue Jays enjoyed a 60-27 rebounding advantage and came up with 25 steals and 24 assists.
Foote's team-high 13 points and four rebounds led Haverford, while Kimura added nine points and three rebounds. The Fords turned the ball over 35 times and hit just 15-of-52 (.288) shots from the floor.
Hopkins will next be in action on Friday night when the Blue Jays play at Muhlenberg. Haverford will play at Gettysburg on Friday night.
