Collegeville, PA - The Ursinus wrestling team opened its Centennial Conference season with a 26-13 win over Johns Hopkins Wednesday night at Helfferich Hall.
The Bears improved to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the league, while the Blue Jays fell to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in conference action.
Senior heavyweight Karol Gryczynski (Ellicott City, MD/Mount Hebron) gave Hopkins the lead with a 5-3 overtime decision over Adam Parcell, but the Bears tied the match at 3-3 when Eddie Murray recorded a 9-2 decision over sophomore John Witzenbocker (Merrick, NY/Chaminade) at 125.
Brian Boland followed with a 5-2 decision over Hopkins junior Jason Suslavich (Winchester, MA/Winchester) at 133, but JHU freshman Marco Priolo (Chevy Chase, MD/St. John's College High) gave the Blue Jays a 7-6 lead by posting 14-1 major decision over Mike Cox at 141.
However, the Bears would take control of the meet by winning the next five matches. Kyle Hart recorded a 6-0 decision over freshman Timothy Hulme (Germantown Academy) at 149, and Scott Roesch followed with a 21-3 technical fall victory over freshman Dustin Tamsen (Seaford, NY/Seaford) at 157 as Ursinus took a 14-7 advantage.
Sean Howard then posted a 6-0 decision over junior Joseph Selba (Pasadena, MD/Mt. St. Joe) at 165, and Kyle Capella recorded a 6-2 decision over sophomore David Kraus (Potomac, MD/Churchill) at 174. Mike Troutman pinned senior Rob Curry (Dayton, OH/Oakwood) at the 3:44 mark at 184, and Hopkins junior Tony Dambro (Glen Mills, PA/Garnet Valley) pinned Matt Fralen at the 1:37 mark at 197 to end the meet.
The Blue Jays continue league action Tuesday when Hopkins hosts Gettysburg at 7 p.m. in Goldfarb Gymnasium.
