Baltimore, MD - Sophomore Abiona Redwood (Kingston, Jamaica/St. Andrew) won the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle to lead the Johns Hopkins women's swimming team to a 111-89 victory over Franklin & Marshall Friday night at the White Athletic Center.
The Blue Jays took the early lead in the meet, as the 200 medley relay team of sophomore Sida Liu (Phoenix, AZ/North Canyon), sophomore Jessica Chang (Penfield, NY/Penfield), junior Diana Smirnova (Las Cruces, NM/Phillips Exeter Academy), and Redwood won its event in 1:31.73.
Sophomore Stephanie Leaman (Grosse Point Woods, MI/Grosse Point North) followed by taking the 1650 freestyle in 18:11.31 before the Diplomats' Jenna Walters captured the 200 freestyle in 1:58.86 to cut the Hopkins lead to 32-23.
Redwood then won the 50 freestyle in 25.16, and after Franklin & Marshall's Kelly Landman took the 400 individual medley in 4:40.04, Smirnova captured the 100 butterfly in 1:00.02 as the Blue Jays extended their lead to 72-40.
Redwood followed by winning the 100 freestyle in 54.97, but the Diplomats again responded as Krystle Satrum won the 100 backstroke in 59.44. Blue Jay sophomore Kalei Walker (Fort Lauderdale, FL/Pine Crest) then took the 500 freestyle in 5:13.38 before Elizabeth Kraljic won the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.13 for Franklin & Marshall.
The Blue Jays closed the meet by winning the 200 freestyle relay, as the team of junior Betsy Maragakes (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East), Walker, sophomore Carly Benner (Stockton, CA/Lincoln), and Leaman won its event in 1:50.00.
The Blue Jays, who improved to 6-4 this season, return to action Saturday, February 7, when Hopkins hosts UMBC at 11 a.m.
