Hopkins Volleyball Cruises By Dickinson

BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins volleyball team shutout the Red Devils of Dickinson, 3-0 this evening in Goldfarb Gymnasium. The win pushed the Blue Jays to 10-9 on the season and 4-2 in conference play, while the Red Devils fall to 14-7, and 5-1 in the conference.

The Blue Jays took the first match 30-19. They maintained a lead throughout the game and were not seriously challenged by the Red Devils. The second game was different. With the score 28-27 in favor of Dickinson, the Blue Jays called a timeout to halt the Red Devils who had just taken the lead. With sophomore Adri Eisen (New York City, NY/Trinity) serving for JHU, the Blue Jays successfully rallied and captured the second game, and led 2-0.

In the third match, Dickinson and JHU traded points for the majority of the first part of the game. Leading 24-23, the Blue Jays broke the serve of the Red Devils, and senior Betsy Baydala (Rockville Center, NY/Southside) held the serve for two points giving JHU a 27-23 advantage. Dickinson broke Baydala?s serve and rattled off three points of their own, to pull to within one at 27-26. But the Blue Jays got the ball back, and sophomore Lizzie Kay (Pacific Palisades, CA/The Cate School) served out the match for JHU.

Junior Katie O?Callaghan (Babylon, NY/West Babylon) led the Blue Jays in kills with 17, while picking up eight digs. Junior Jen Hajj (Boca Raton, FL/Pope John Paul II) collected ten kills for the Jays. Baydala picked up ten kills, 28 assists and seven digs, while Kay had 12 digs from her libero position. Freshman Mary Gorski (Birmingham, MI/Shrine Catholic) led the Jays with 15 digs, while also picking up 20 assists.

For Dickinson, junior Ashley Larkin (Bowie, MD/Eleanor Roosevelt) led the team in digs with 24, while sophomore Ashley Young (Hume, VA/Fauquier) and junior Margie Hatch (Rockville, MD/Wooton-Principia Upper) each garnered ten kills.

The Blue Jays will next be in action on Saturday when they host Haverford at 1 pm.
