CLAREMONT, CA - The men's water polo team (11-11) remained at .500 over the weekend when it went 2-2 at the Claremont Convergence Tournament. Johns Hopkins started the weekend with wins over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 11-10 and Chapman 13-7 but then lost their next two.
Senior Brian Mead (Palo Alto, CA/Gunn) and freshman Sean McCreery (Pleasant Hills, CA/De La Salle) led the Blue Jays past the Stags with four and three goals apiece while senior Mac Sanford (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) paced the offense against Chapman with a game-high four goals. In both games, Johns Hopkins took a first-quarter lead and never trailed.
The Blue Jays then dropped their next two games 11-6 to Whittier and 9-8 to La Verne on Saturday, Oct. 9. Junior Robert Bates (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) scored three goals against Whittier, which outscored Johns Hopkins 8-4 in the second half after a tied game in the first.
In the final game of the tournament, the Blue Jays trailed 7-5 entering the final quarter against La Verne but McCreery's two late goals and another goal from Mead forced overtime with the game tied 8-8.
La Verne scored once in the second overtime for the 9-8 win over Hopkins, which received a game-high four goals from McCreery.
Johns Hopkins plays Princeton at Navy this Saturday, Oct. 16 (time TBA).
