Baltimore, MD - Junior Steve Read (Skillman, NJ/The Lawrenceville School) scored his team-high seventh goal of the year and assisted another to lead the Johns Hopkins men's soccer team past Dickinson 2-0 at Homewood Field. The Centennial Conference win improved the second-ranked Blue Jays to 9-0-0 (3-0-0 CC) while the Red Devils dropped to 5-5-1 (1-3-0 CC).
Both teams started off slow and neither could find the back of the net in the first half when Hopkins out-shot Dickinson 10-1. Aaron Stemplewicz made four first-half saves for the visitors to keep the game scoreless at the break.
The No. 2 team in the nation wasted no time after the half, peppering the goal and connecting on its first score just 1:14 into the second period. Read beat his defender one-on-one and slipped a low shot passed Stemplewicz for a 1-0 Johns Hopkins lead at 46:14.
JHU's insurance goal came at 62:35 when Read headed the ball to sophomore Blaine Phillips (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley), whose header sailed past Stemplewicz between the posts.
The Blue Jays finished with 21 shots including five from sophomore Joe Pinero (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown) and three apiece from Phillips and sophomore Moath Hamzeh (Clarksville, MD/River Hill) while the defense held the Red Devils to just three shots.
