BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins volleyball team picked up their eighth conference win of the season, and secured a spot no lower than third in the upcoming Centennial Conference playoffs, by defeating the Green Terror of McDaniel, 3-2.

In a night that began by honoring senior Betsy Baydala (Rockville Center, NY/Southside), playing in her final regular season home match, two other Blue Jays also shared the spotlight. Junior Katie O?Callaghan (Babylon, NY/West Babylon) picked up two early digs in the first game to reach the 1,000-dig mark for her career. With 1,026 digs, O?Callaghan is currently fifth in career digs at JHU. Sophomore Lizzie Kay (Pacific Palisades, CA/The Cate School) also collected her 1,000 dig in the match for JHU. With 1,016 digs, Kay is currently in sixth place in career digs at Hopkins, right behind O?Callaghan. Kay, with 516 digs on the season, also reestablished the single season digs record, which she set last year as a freshman with 500.

McDaniel jumped out early and took the first game from JHU, 30-22, putting the Blue Jays in an early hole. On the serves of sophomore Amy Green (Orinda, CA/Head Royce School) and O?Callaghan, the Blue Jays were able to take the second game from the Green Terror, 30-25. The Blue Jays used the momentum they gained in game two to take the third game from McDaniel 30-19, in convincing fashion. McDaniel remained resilient though, and bounced back to take the fourth game, 30-28, and tie the match at two.

The fifth, and deciding game, was a see-saw battle early, but the Blue Jays were able to pull ahead, and take the final game 15-10. Baydala picked up 60 assists in the match brining her career total to 3,342, trailing only Michelle Dumler?s 3,376. Junior Jen Hajj (Boca Raton, FL/Pope John Paul II) and O?Callaghan led JHU in kills with 19 in the match.

The Blue Jays will take to the court again on Saturday when they host the Ascis/JHU Invitational with matches starting at 9 am in Goldfarb Gymnasium.
