Third-Ranked Salisbury Eliminates Men's Soccer In NCAA Sectionals

Nov. 20, 2004

Box Score

SALISBURY, MD - Salisbury's leading scorer Bill Whittington recorded the lone goal, and his 16th of the year, to lead the host Seagulls past Johns Hopkins 1-0 in a NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship sectional game. The Seagulls (19-0-3) meet the winner of Stevens Tech vs. Richard Stockton in the sectional final tomorrow, Sunday Nov. 21 at 1 p.m., while the Blue Jays end their season at 17-1-2.

Third-ranked Salisbury out-shot second-ranked Johns Hopkins 6-3 in the first half but Blue Jay senior goalkeeper Gary Kane, Jr. (LaSalle, PA/Lansdale) made three early saves and Seagull keeper Jason Cranford was untested in goal, leading to a 0-0 halftime score.

A Johns Hopkins foul in the 67th minute set up Markus Hunkeler for an indirect kick, which he positioned in front of the box for Whittington to knock in. The goal came at 67:58 on Salisbury's 11th shot and Whittington's fourth. It was the fifth goal allowed by Kane, Jr. and the sixth by Hopkins in 20 games this year.

The Blue Jays earned six second-half corner kicks but managed just two more shots, including one on goal. Hopkins finished the game leading in corner kicks (8-6) and trailing in shots (14-5). Kane, Jr. had five saves in all 90 minutes in goal while Cranford finished with one.

Johns Hopkins ends its season with the best winning percentage (.900), the fewest number of losses, and one win shy of the record for wins in the Blue Jay men's soccer history. The loss to Salisbury was the eighth in program history, with Hopkins still leading the all-time series 11-8-2.
