GETTYSBURG, PA - The Johns Hopkins volleyball team downed the second-seeded Diplomats of Franklin & Marshall this afternoon in the Centennial Conference Semifinals. With the win the Blue Jays improve to 18-9 on the year, and advance to the Centennial Conference finals for the second straight year, while Franklin & Marshall falls to 20-10.
The Blue Jays took an early 2-0 games lead, winning the first game 30-21, and the second 30-23. The second-seeded Diplomats of Franklin & Marshall rallied, however, and took games three and four 30-27 and 30-23, respecitvelly, setting up the deciding game five.
The Blue Jays were able to take the pivotal game five and advance to the Centennial Conference finals. Tied at 12 in the final game, O'Callaghan knocked down a kill for a 13-12 advantage. The teams swapped attack errors before O'Callaghan put away her final kill of the afternoon to give Johns Hopkins the match, 15-13. The Blue Jays will take on the Bullets of Gettysburg tomorrow at noon in the Centennial Conference finals played at Gettysburg.
Junior Katie O?Callaghan (Babylon, NY/West Babylon) led Hopkins in kills with 21, while collecting 14 digs. Senior Betsy Baydala (Rockville, NY/Southside) led the Blue Jays in assists with 44 while picking up 10 kills and 25 digs. Baydala now has 1,722 digs for her career, setting the career record in the Centennial Conference. Sophomore Lizzie Kay (Pacific Palisades, CA/The Cate School) picked up another 45 digs increasing her season total to 617, a JHU single-season record.
