GETTYSBURG, PA - Freshman Sarah Butler (Salt Lake City, UT/East) picked up her first career goal in overtime to lead the Johns Hopkins women?s soccer team into the finals of the Centennial Conference?s women?s soccer tournament. The Blue Jays will square off against the Bullets of Gettysburg tomorrow at noon in Gettysburg.
In an overtime period that saw Johns Hopkins out-shot the Fords 3-0, Butler picked up the game winning goal 8:03 in. Sophomore Laurie Baumann (Milford, MI/Greenmills School) fed the ball from the right side to Butler who beat Ford goalie Andrea Fishman with a low hard shot.
The Fords took a 1-0 lead as Lindsey Dolich scored off an Allison Frank assist to give Haverford an early lead. Despite taking six shots in the first half, the Blue Jays were held off the board as Haverford took the 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Blue Jays played a very determined second half, looking to even the score. With less than four minutes in regulation, Lindsey Kimura (Los Angeles, CA/Harvard-Westlake) collected a service from Jessie McKenzie (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) off an indirect kick and scored, tying the game at one.
Tomorrow afternoon?s game will be the third conference final for the Blue Jays. They won the title in 2002, and fell short in the 2001. The Blue Jays lost a match earlier this season to Gettysburg, 3-1, also in Gettysburg. In the Conference Tournament, the Bullets and Blue Jays have met three times with Hopkins holding a 2-0-1 advantage. Gettysburg and Hopkins tied in 2003, but the Bullets advanced in penalty kicks.
