GETTYSBURG, PA - The Gettysburg College volleyball team defeated the Blue Jays of Johns Hopkins, 3-0, in today's Centennial Conference finals. The Bullets captured their 10th conference title, and fourth in as many years.
Gettysburg and the Blue Jays traded points in the early part of the first game, before the Bullets were able to distance themselves from JHU. Steph Vail held the Gettysburg serve seven times as the Bullets raced off to a 17-10 advantage. JHU was not able to close the gap, as the Bullets took the first game, 30-21.
In the second game JHU and Gettysburg again traded early points.With JHU leading 18-17, Nicole Barr picked up a kill and served four times running the Gettysburg lead to 20-17. Once again, the Bullets never looked back, maintaining at least a two point advantage for the rest of the game, and taking it 30-26.
Like the first two games the two squads traded early points. After an attack error by JHU with the score 9-7, the Bullets rattled off three straight points for a 12-7 advantage. The Blue Jays remained tough, though, keeping the game within reach. With the score 21-16, Gettysburg's Jessica Cortese served the Bullets to a 23-16 lead. JHU made an attempt to come back, but fell short dropping the third game, 30-21.
For JHU junior Katie O'Callaghan (Babylon, NY/West Babylon) led the team in kills with 11, while freshman Natalia Fijalkowski (Windosr, CA/Windsor) added eight. Senior Betsy Baydala (Rockville Center, NY/Southside) added 24 more assists to her total this season, in addition to four kills and five digs.
JHU finishes the season 18-10. This is the second straight season in which the Blue Jays have posted at least 18 wins, and have had a winning percentage greater than .640.
