SWARTHMORE, PA - Senior Ashley Felix (Pittsburgh, PA/North Catholic) and junior Amanda Leese (Amherst, NH/Bishop Guertin) scored six of their game-high 10 points in the second half and sophomore Julie Miller (Annandale, PA/Thomas Jefferson) scored all seven of her points in the final 14 minutes as Johns Hopkins escaped Swarthmore 43-37 at Tarble Pavilion. The Blue Jays (7-1 overall, 4-0 CC) trailed 28-17 at the half before holding the Garnet Tide (4-4, 1-2) to just nine second-half points off 2-for-27 shooting.
Leese, in her third start of the year, scored the game's first two points 30 seconds after tip-off and Felix scored her first points of the night with 16:55 on the clock to put the Blue Jays ahead 4-3. That was the last time Johns Hopkins would lead until 10:41 remained in the second.
Swarthmore out-rebounded the Blue Jays 29-17 in the first half and Karen Berk scored eight points off 4-for-9 shooting to give the Garnet a 28-17 lead at the break. The Garnet led by just three with 6:23 to play but ended the half with an 11-3 run.
In the second half, Swarthmore quickly built its biggest lead of the night, 30-17, off two Alison Wolff free throws before Hopkins rallied its second come-from-behind win of the year. Felix scored her second field goal of the game, Leese hit two jumpers and junior Katie O'Malley (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) nailed a three to cut Swarthmore's lead to four points, 30-26, with 15:49 remaining.
Free throws by junior Katie Kimball (Garden City, NY/Garden City) and sophomore Tamera Means (McDonough, GA/Eagle Landing) brought Hopkins within one before Leese scored at 10:41 to give the Blue Jays their first lead of the half, 33-32. Miller scored five points in the final 4:03 and Felix made four second-half steals as Johns Hopkins held on for the win.
The Blue Jays shot 16 for 58 (.276) from the field, 2 for 16 (.125) from long range and 9 for 21 (.391) on free throws, and were out-rebounded (54-46) for the first time this year. Swarthmore finished the game with a .237 field goal percentage and 22 turnovers.
Leese and Felix led Hopkins with 10 points and eight rebounds apiece while Kimball and Miller each added seven points and seven rebounds.
Johns Hopkins takes a holiday break and returns to action at the Grand Canyon Classic on Dec. 29-30.
